Two months to take off

In December 2014...

we finally decided to follow our dream and began preparations for the journey. Now, with 2 months to take off, 2 weeks of employment and 1 week to giving away the apartment, anticipation grows by the day.

Although planning is left to a minimum...

some things are better taken care of before the trip. So, employment contracts are dealt away with (Anna resigned, Tuomas never got a chance to), landlord has been notified, most possession gotten rid of, visas approved, and insurance plan chosen and farewell party in planning. On top of all, pages after pages of travel literature have been and are being consumed. What else is there?

Giving up things...

has been relatively effortless. Compact living, Anna’s pedantry and endless desire for organization have ensured that our home is not filled to the brim. In the last year, all purchases have been under even greater scrutiny. Instead, unnecessary things have seen their way out of the door, by sale or donation. Remaining furniture go to the new tenant. Only the dearest memorabilia, some sporting equipment and clothes we will store at relatives’. Thank you!
Getting new gear...

on the other hand, has been hard. It is a balancing act between weight, durability, ecology and costs.

Everything has to fit into our backpacks – camping gear, dining facilities and utensils and rags for various weather. Especially for the hike on the Pacific Crest Trail, it makes sense to carefully consider what to pack.

Initially, we thought we had most gear covered. And we did. But, there turned out to be numerous more functional alternatives for our existing gear, most notably in terms of weight. Turns out, shaving of the grams makes a huge difference in completing the hike – so we’ve read.

More detailed descriptions on gear choices in near future posts.
