A chicken bus to Guatemala

1
Travelling entails many interesting factors. In addition to considering options for accommodation, dining or activities, you may find yourself in a situation where you need to consider different and sometimes very exciting options for moving from A to B. Even more so, if you are travelling for extended periods of time.

Certainly, there is a suitable option for everyone. For us, the decisive factor is price. Saved pennies compensate for any (and very probable) loss in comfort, and time.

We've travelled on chicken busses, minivans and hichhiked on pick-up trucks, which locals use to get from town to town. The first ones are old US school busses and, after walking and hitchhiking, the cheapest form of transportation. One theory suggests that their name is derived from the way in which passenger squash (or are squashed) into the buses, much like chicken into their cages in less ethical production facilities.

The price of your journey depends on the chosen form of transportation. On a chicken bus, a rough estimate is that you pay approximately 10 quetzales (1.2€) for every hour of travel. Minivans are more expensive - in some cases "even" double the price. A rule of thumb is that the more locals aboard, the cheaper the ride.

Most notable chicken bus and minivan identifiers:

1. Chicken buses are brightly coloured (most of them at least). Minivans are mostly Toyota Hiaces.
2. You can hop on and off anywhere.
3. A small Toyota Hiace fits 25 passengers, easily! Some outside. A chicken bus fits hundreds.
4. One driver and one helper, of which the latter is the vocal one and can be seen outside of the bus, especially in urban areas.
5. Old vehicles in varied conditions.

How does it work?

1. Set yourself by the side of the road, anywhere.
2. Detect an aproaching vehicle. If it is in the business of offering rides, it will most probably flash its headlights and/or make a sound.
3. Wave to communicate your need of a ride (sometimes they will miss you due to excessive speed - do not be alarmed, pick up your backpack and go after it).
4. Even if the ride might mistakenly look like a minivan favoured by the locals, check contents first. If majority of passengers are other than local, skip the ride. Most likely this one is a shuttlebus for tourists, and priced accordingly.
5. Check whether its going your way (mentioning your destination is enough).
6. If you have a chance, check for costs - How many quetzales to [your destination]? = Cuantos quetzales a...? Know your numbers and, to have an idea of the cost, ask your accommodation for the approximate price of the journey. You'll pay after having taken a seat.
7. If the price is good, hop on. A chicken bus can be boarded through the rear door - take your backpack inside the bus and shove in the overhead racks or between your legs. A minivan ride can also be enjoyed on the roof terrace, if indoors are already squashed with travellers - it is best to check opening times of the roof terrace from the ride provider.
8. Sit, or stand, and enjoy the scenery and a chat with the locals.
9. Pay for the ride. If possible, keep your eye on what others are paying for their ride. However, do not be alarmed if your fellow travellers pay less - it might just be that your destinations are not the same.

Summa summarum

- With tourist shuttle busses you may miss experiences, places and sights. Although, they are justified if your time is limited.
- In our experience, safety is not to be concerned with. Chicken busses may be too much for the weak stomached as rides may emulate roller coasters.
- Local transportation is a fluid way of travelling - connections are good and frequent, so much so that we have not had to wait anywhere. It is amazing!

We'd be more than happy to hear about your experiences on local transportation in Guatemala. Got any, drop us a comment!

Holbox - relaxed beaches and colourful life

0

Holbox is an island in Mexico, in the 'vicinity' of Riviera Maya and its famous tourist destinations and resorts. Still, schedule at least a few hourse for bus and ferry rides, depending on where you plan on taking the bus from.

The island economy is based on fiahing and tourism. You'll find plenty to do from relaxed beaches to fishing, diving and wildlife watching. Beginning of the year is famous amongst kitesurfers, whereas summer months are great for whaleshark and turtle watching.

Absolutely worth a visit! The island is small and our significance on its economy big. Hence, we also have great power and responsobility in determining its future development. Lets make responsible and sustainable choices!

In our six days, we made some observations, both good and less than so:

+ All beaches are public. No major hotel chains on the island.
+ Beaches in general: plenty to walk and you might see flamingos on the way!
+ Retained its authenticity, even with growing tourism. Note! Very little to offer for those seeking luxury.
+ Possibility to camp on established camping grounds. Great for budget travellers!
+ Nearly carless, completely tarmacless.
+ Safe, sincere and relaxed.
+ Manageable, on bike or even foot, in a week.
+ You get to experience the island on your own terms - no agressive peddlers.

- Nearly carless, but by no means golfcartless. Their noise can get annoying, especially around the center square.
- Mosquitoes at camp at dawn and dusk. Quick to bite, but not ichy for a long time.
- Overprized crepe-guy at center square. Or, we got tricked. ;) Worth learning at least the numbers.

* (Credit) cards are accepted in some places, but you should not count on it. An ATM is located next to the center square. MasterCard is cheaper compared to Visa. Make a note of your own bank's possible extra costs for withdrawing money abroad.
* In Chiquila (harbour town for the Holbox ferry), ticket office for the busses is a person sitting on a fence. No official booth. Nearly missed her in all our hurry.
* Pay with your card as often as possible (despite the 2-5% extra charge). If necessary, withdraw money at an ATM. Only as a last resort, exchange your home currency for pesos, and try to avoid doing so at the airport. Exhange rates for euro (€) vary between 15 MXN$ (at the airport) and 19 MXN$.

Our budget for two:
(1€ = 20$; average rate of the Mexican Central Bank)

Bus Cancun-Chiquila: 11€/220$
Ferry Chiquila-Holbox-Chiquila: 24,5€/490$
Accommodation: camping 15,5€/310$ per night, Hostel & Cabanas Ida y Vuelta Camping. They also have dormitories and provate cabins. Quiet neighborhood, only 200 meters to the beach. A light breakfast is included. A strong recommendation!
Eating: We dined varyingly at restaurants/ cafes and cooked ourselves - never spent more than 20€/400MXN$ per day. On the street from the harbour to the center square, there is a stand selling the best warm baguettes and hamburgers.

Our goal was to get by on less than 50€/1000MXN$ per day, and achieved it easily. Although, we did not take part in any organized tours or acivities and left shopping to a minimum.

Holbox - rentoa rantaa ja värikästä elämää

1
Holbox on saari Meksikossa, Riviera Mayan suosittujen lomakohteiden 'läheisyydessä'.

Huom! Rajallisesti tarjottavaa luksuslomailijalle.
+ Suomesta edulliset lennot Cancuniin, ja saarella telttailumahdollisuuksia. Edullinen loma on mahdollinen.

- Ylihinnoiteltu Crepemies keskustorin laidalla. Kannattaa aina tarkistaa hinta...ja opetella numerot paikallisella kielellä.

* Saarella (luotto)kortit kelpaavat jotenkin. Pankkiautomaatti keskusaukion laidalla. Nosto MasterCardilla puolet edullisempi kuin Visalla. Huomioithan lisäksi oman pankkisi mahdolliset nostomaksut.
* Chiquilassa (satamakylä mantereella) bussilipun myyjä istuu aidalla - ei virallista kojua. Meinasi jäädä lähtökiireessä huomaamatta.
* Ensisijaisesti kannattaa maksaa kortilla (2-5%:n lisämaksusta huolimatta), tarvittaessa nostaa rahaa, ja viimeisenä oljenkortena vaihtaa kotimaan valuuttaa. Lentokentällä kaikkein huonoin vaihtokurssi (1€ = 15$, Meksikon peso), muutoin vaihdettaessa paikasta riippuen 1€ = 16,5 - 19$.

Budjetti kahdelta:
(1€ = 20$; vaihtokurssi Meksikon keskuspankin keskimääräinen)

Bussi Cancun-Chiquila: 11€/220$
Lautta Chiquila-Holbox-Chiquila: 24,5€/490$
Majoitus: telttapaikka 15,5€/310$ per yö, Hostel & Cabanas Ida y Vuelta Camping. Löytyy myös dormeja ja yksityisiä huoneita. Rauhallisella paikalla, rannalle 200 metriä. Kevyt aamiainen sisältyy hintaan. Vahva suositus!
Ruoat: Aterioimme vaihtelevasti ulkona ja itse kokaten. Ruokiin ei kuitenkaan mennyt koskaan yli 20€:a/400$:a päivässä.

Itinerary

0
Take-off is on January 18th, 2016. First two months will be spent on the Mexico-Belize-Guatemala –axis without specific plans. The only intention is to dive into history, culture, language and seas. Any spare time will also be spent in awe.

Pacific Crest Trail, PCT
In March we’ll begin our long journey from the US-Mexico border on the Pacific Crest Trail. The goal is to hike 2600 miles/ 4300 kilometers in about five months. The timeframe is set by the US Tourist Visa and weather conditions on the trail. We are definitely not looking forward to finding ourselves on trail in an autumn snowstorm without valid travel documents.

Nearly all preparations are aimed at completing the hike, from minimal training to gear purchases.

The hike itself was born on spur of the moment. “-Hey, there’s this little hike. You wanna go? -Yeah, I just read about it too. We could try it. -Okay, we’re going.”

If we make it all the way to Canada, on foot, it is a) a miracle and b) proves that anyone can do it. According to Tuomas, it is an option to quit the hike if we feel like it. Anna, however, holds onto the thought that hike continues, even if heads start falling off. Stay tuned to find out who feeds whom to a bear. Or, escapes into the wild with all supplies.

Life after the hike is a mystery. Thoughts are on the beaches of Central and South America. However, any tropical corner of the world is a possibility. Experience has shown that oceanfront is intriguing after dust and rocks.

Journey will last as long as possible. What are return tickets?

Matkasuunnitelma

0
18. tammikuuta 2016 lähdemme Helsingistä kohti Meksikoa ja Jukatanin niemimaata. Tarkoituksena on viettää ensimmäiset pari kuukautta akselilla Meksiko-Belize-Guatemala ilman suurempia suunnitelmia. Ainoina etukäteisaikomuksina on sukeltaa alueen historiaan, kulttuuriin, kieleen ja meriin. Muukin aika mennee ihmetellessä.

Pacific Crest Trail, PCT
Maaliskuussa 2016 aloitamme vaelluksen Meksikon rajalta kohti Kanadaa Pacific Crest Trailillä (PCT). Tavoite on kävellä 4300 kilometrin matka noin viiden kuukauden aikana. Aikaraamin asettavat Yhdysvaltojen turistiviisumin voimassaoloaika sekä sääolot. Ei haluta löytää itseämme polulta syksyn lumipyryssä ilman voimassaolevia maassaololupia.

Lähes kaikki matkaan liittyvä ennakkovalmistautuminen on tehty vaellusta silmällä pitäen, minimaalisiksi jääneistä treeneistä varustehankintoihin.

Vaellus on puhdas päähänpisto, jonka ajatteleminenkin naurattaa.

Vinkki: Kokeilethan rinkkaa realistisella kuormituksella!

Toki vanhoista on hankkiuduttu eroon.

Lopulta me molemmat päädyimmekin rinkkoihin, joissa on kaksi erillistä isompaa säilytystilaa.

Pilli integroituna rintaremmiin.

Annan selässä keikkuu Deuterin ACT lite 50+10, jolla painoa n. 1600 grammaa. Tuomaksella puolestaan vajaa 1200 grammainen Bergansin Trysil 65.

Lisäkuulumisia rinkkojen toimivuudesta tulossa, kunhan ne ensin pääsevät tositoimiin!

How do we camp?

1

"We really were supposed to have everything?" And we did, until we got our heads wrapped around the Pacific Crest Trail. The decision to attempt it put a whole new emphasis and a set of requirements on our gear. We are not fanatic about shaving every gram, but certain scrutiny is necessary, especially when we carry everything with us.

Camping gear is no exception. In fact, this is where we shaved the most grams.

For more general thoughts on gear, read our previous post.

Tent

Our old Marmot Aura 2p is a fine tent - easy to pitch up, freestanding double layer structure and two good sized vestibules. But, at 2.4kg/5.3lbs, a "bit" heavy compared to many of the tents favored by PCT hikers (many go as light as only having a tarp).
Marmot Aura & Finnish Archipelago,
2014

After consideration, we opted on a US based Zpacks and their Triplex tent.

It saved us 1.5kg/ 3.3 lbs and gave plenty more room. Apart from the netting, the tent is made of cuben fiber. The material is extremely light, durable and waterproof, and retains its form, even when wet.

In addition to ground stakes, there are no separate poles. Instead, you use hiking poles to pitch it. Again a weight save since they are part of the pack anyway.

It might not come as a surprise then, that the most decisive factor in purchasing a new tent was weight. Also, the two vestibules were a requirement to allow for easier nightly excursions.

The Triplex has received good reviews, but personal experiences are nil. We'll get back to you on this from trail.

The tent set us back 600€. When shopping online, take note of the rules of the EU taxation and customs union, and especially possible duties and VAT. Our tent was delivered to a relative in the US and so we avoided the tax burden. Naturally, if we ever bring the tent into the EU, we'd have to see about the necessity for a customs declaration.

Sleeping "bags" and pads

Not an easy one either. In principle, Anna's old down sleeping bag would be fine. Tuomas' summer bag, on the other hand, would not suffice. And then there is the question of weight. Both of our old bags are on the heavy side and therefore in need of replacement.

Campers, summer 2015

Eventually we opted for a small US company, Enlightened Equipment, and their Convert quilts. Why? Because of weight (Anna's 840g/ 29.6 oz, Tuomas' 890g/ 31.5 oz), price and interest in trying out a new type product - a hoodless sleeping bag.

The Convert is also more roomy compared to traditional mummy style sleeping bags, especially at hips and knees. The hoodless design allows for more freedom of movement as well. Both of us are restless sleepers and more than once we have found ourselves with our faces turned into the hood of our old bags. In a hoodless quilt, you're free doc twist at your will. Lack of a hood does necessitate a proper head coverage (e.g. a comfy beanie).

Extra credit for Zpacks for using European duck down (goose down is better quality, but also more expensive). The duck down is collected as a byproduct of the meat industry. True, there could be more ethical options, but at least there is no force-feeding or live-plucking.

The quilts are rated 10F/-12C. A lighter bag would suffice for the PCT hike, but since the supplier uses a rating "similar" to the EN lower limit rating, we wanted to be on the safe side. Our silk liners further increase warmth, if needed, and also preserve the insides of the quilts.

An interesting detail in the Enlightened Equipment quilts is the possibility to customize your quilt, down to color options. Pictures to follow - we did not stick to traditional color combinations.

At least as important to the quilts are sleeping pads. A quality quilt does no good if you lose heat through a poor pad. We will most likely opt for Exped Synmat Hyperlite pads and combine them with an extra insulation and protective layers underneath (e.g. mylar blankets).

...

We'll retain our old gear as reserves, just in case. It may well be that the PCT (about 4000km/ 2600miles and anywhere from four to six months) proves too much for our new gear. Also, shaving off every single gram is not as important after the hike.

p.s. Of the two of us, Anna is the colder sleeper - having been in charge of equipment, Tuomas is naturally a tad nervous. I'm sure we'll get back to this as well.

Onko turvallista matkustaa?

0

Saat ajatuksen matkakohteesta. Innostut ääriäsi myöten. Etsit mahdollisimman edullisen tavan toteuttaa matkan. Intopinkeänä odotat lähtöpäivää. Sitten, huoli tai ainakin ajatukset turvallisuudesta hiipivät mieleen. Näin siis meillä - viimeinen kohta erityisen herkästi Tuomaksella, aina.

Halu nähdä, kokea ja elää vs. riskit

Yht'äkkiä riskit tuntuvat liian suurilta - seuraa paniikinomainen reaktio. Voiko sittenkään lähteä? Esimerkiksi kesän 2014 Kenia-Tansania -matkasuunnitelma meni jo ajatuksissa uusiksi Tuomaksen "turvallisuusanalyysin" pohjalta.

Annan mielestä kaikkialla on turvallista - kaikkihan on itsestä kiinni.

Maalaisjärkeä on hyvä täydentää globaalijärjellä.

Huolettaako turvallisuus? Kuulemme mielellämme ajatuksiasi.

P.s. Ulkoasiainministeriöllämme on matkustamista ja konsulipalveluitaan käsittelevä bloginsa. Mielenkiintoista luettavaa ministeriöläisiltä ympäri maailmaa. Suosittelemme! Kannattaa myös perehtyä matkustustiedotteisiin.

Why do we journey?

0

Dreams –

Because staying still we would certainly regret. This dream feels exactly right, but also surreal – you sense the freedom and excitement, but have not necessarily fully understood what is about take place. Positive sensations, nevertheless. And timing couldn’t be better, since autumn is closing in and winter right around the corner.

It also seems that our plans have encouraged relatives and friends to fulfill their own dreams.

It feels as if the trip is no big deal – how hard can it be to make that decision? Easy, just make it. On the other hand, having set our minds on the journey, it’s always slightly startling to see peoples’ expressions when you tell them about your plans. In the end, the decision seems like a big deal.

Why, then, was it relatively effortless for us? Maybe all of it has not sunk in yet. Or, perhaps our lives were at such a stage that it truly is no big deal. Or then, this just is what we really want, whether we fully understand it or not.
Retain only the necessary –

Minimalism befits the wandering spirit. Anna is the one more bent on having as little as possible. Though, some it keeps rubbing off on to Tuomas, as well.

For him, the journey is also an experiment. The material mind of the surrounding society has made him think – what truly is meaningful?

Having gotten used to the material cycle, it’s time to take step in the other direction; time to see how much more can you have with how much less – or can you?

Anna, on the contrary, desired minimalism already at a young age. Minimally decorated room may have been to counteract the excess of parents born in the times of shortage. A short fling with materialism in early adulthood has long since faded. Need to characterize oneself or feel independent by buying and owning things is no more. Quite the contrary – the less I consume the more I feel like myself: joyous, free, energetic. Also, the less I own the less I have to lose. And how liberating does that feel! Security is not in stuff, but in freedom and the beloved one on your side.
Changing scenery

...refreshes the mind, teaches empathy and concretizes change. Change is an opportunity, but also a must. Surely, the familiar is more secure and comfortable – much like woollen socks: warm and cozy, but not very surprising. No grudge against sheep, wool or their socks. But, hopefully we dare to leave our feet as bare as possible. Might stump our toes or get splinters, but then so be it.
We are willing to give up and make an effort to experience another way of living. Getting settled is possible later. And if not, then not being able to buy a house is far less likely to cause remorse than having stayed still. Regular employment contract stipulated vacations to explore the world simply do not suffice.
One way tickets

Predetermined vacation requires planning. One way tickets and little knowledge of return is liberating and empowering.

Two months to take off

0

In December 2014...

we finally decided to follow our dream and began preparations for the journey. Now, with 2 months to take off, 2 weeks of employment and 1 week to giving away the apartment, anticipation grows by the day.

Although planning is left to a minimum...

some things are better taken care of before the trip. So, employment contracts are dealt away with (Anna resigned, Tuomas never got a chance to), landlord has been notified, most possession gotten rid of, visas approved, and insurance plan chosen and farewell party in planning. On top of all, pages after pages of travel literature have been and are being consumed. What else is there?

Giving up things...

has been relatively effortless. Compact living, Anna’s pedantry and endless desire for organization have ensured that our home is not filled to the brim. In the last year, all purchases have been under even greater scrutiny. Instead, unnecessary things have seen their way out of the door, by sale or donation. Remaining furniture go to the new tenant. Only the dearest memorabilia, some sporting equipment and clothes we will store at relatives’. Thank you!
Getting new gear...

on the other hand, has been hard. It is a balancing act between weight, durability, ecology and costs.
